How to Dominate Your Bracket: Tips for the Big College Basketball Tournament

Welcome to the most unproductive, exhilarating, and "why-did-I-pick-that-team" three weeks of the year. Here in Columbus, Ohio, we take our sports seriously. Whether we’re debating the best spot for wings in the Short North or analyzing point spreads, the energy during the big college basketball tournament is unmatched.

I’m Steven Scott, and while my day job involves helping you navigate the complexities of home loans at Affinity Group Mortgage, my "side hustle" this time of year is trying to convince my friends that my bracket isn’t going to be busted by Thursday afternoon.

Choosing a winning bracket is actually a lot like choosing a mortgage. It requires a bit of research, a solid understanding of the "market," and the ability to distinguish between a flashy trend and a long-term winner. If you’re tired of finishing at the bottom of your office pool, sit back, grab a coffee, and let’s talk strategy.

1. The Golden Rule: Don’t Be a Hero in the First Round

We all want to be the person who correctly predicted the 16-seed toppling the 1-seed. It makes you look like a genius for about twelve seconds. But here is the cold, hard reality: the most impactful mistake bracket builders make is overweighting first-round upsets.

In most scoring systems, the points double every round. This means correctly picking the National Champion is worth as many points as getting all 32 first-round games right. If you pick a 14-seed to win a game and they lose in the second round, you’ve gained a tiny handful of points. But if you accidentally knock out a Final Four contender because you were trying to be "clever," your bracket is effectively DOA.

Think of it like choosing a loan option. You don’t want to gamble your entire future on a high-risk "upset" when the safe, data-driven move: like a reliable 30-year fixed: is what’s going to get you across the finish line. Focus your brainpower on the Elite Eight and beyond. That’s where the real money (and glory) is made.

2. Know Your Pool (And Your Competition)

Before you put pen to paper (or mouse to digital bracket), you need to understand the environment. Strategic risk is relative.

If you are in a small pool with 10–20 people, stay conservative. In a small group, you don’t need to be perfect; you just need to avoid being disastrous. Let your friends eliminate themselves with wild "Cinderella" picks while you ride the top seeds into the second weekend.

However, if you’re entering a massive pool with 300+ entries, you have to be a bit more aggressive. In a large field, if everyone picks the favorite to win it all, even if that favorite wins, you’re tied with 50 other people. To win a large pool, you need to identify undervalued teams that the public is ignoring.

It’s just like the Ohio real estate market. In a crowded neighborhood in Columbus, you have to find that "undervalued" property before everyone else sees the potential. Use our mortgage calculator to see what you can afford, then apply that same level of calculation to your bracket picks.

3. The Nerd Stuff: Let Data Be Your Guide

I love a good "gut feeling" as much as the next guy, but data doesn’t lie. If you want to identify a true National Champion, look at advanced analytics like KenPom.

Over the last 23 tournaments, 22 of the champions ranked in the top 25 for both adjusted offensive and defensive efficiency. Balance is key. A team that scores 100 points but can’t guard a parked car will eventually run into a cold shooting night and get bounced.

Currently, teams that fit this elite "balanced" metric include heavy hitters like Houston, Arizona, and Duke. When you’re looking for a champion, don’t just look at who has the star player: look at who has the most efficient system. At Affinity Group Mortgage, we take the same approach to refinancing. We don’t just look at one number; we look at the whole picture to make sure the move makes sense for your long-term goals.

4. Predicting the "Standard" Upsets

While we don't want to go overboard, you can't pick all favorites and expect to win. Since 2015, we've seen an average of nearly nine first-round upsets per tournament.

Here are the trends to watch:

  • The 12 vs. 5 Matchup: This is a classic for a reason. No. 12 seeds are notoriously dangerous.
  • The 11-Seed Surge: On average, No. 11 seeds win twice as often as you’d think. They often feature veteran players who have been through the ringer.
  • The 10-Seed Value: Statistically, 10-seeds are very reliable for a first-round win.

Don't just pick upsets at random. Look for the double-digit seed that has a veteran point guard and shoots the three-ball well. In basketball, as in applying online for a mortgage, having your documentation (and your defense) in order is what prevents surprises.

5. The Ohio Connection

Being based in Columbus, Ohio, we have a front-row seat to some of the best basketball culture in the country. We know that heart and grit matter, but so does strategy. Whether you're a die-hard fan of the local teams or you're just here for the office camaraderie, there's something special about this time of year.

6. Closing the Deal: The Final Four

When you get to the Final Four, the cream usually rises to the top. In 14 consecutive tournaments leading up to 2025, at least one No. 4 seed or higher has made it to the national semifinals. However, don't get too crazy in the championship game. Six of the last ten title games featured two No. 1 seeds.

It’s tempting to pick the "miracle" team to go all the way, but history says that by the final Monday night, the giants are usually the ones left standing. It’s about longevity. It’s about consistency. It’s about having a plan and sticking to it.

At Affinity Group Mortgage, we’re all about the "Final Four" of lending:

  1. Integrity
  2. Efficiency
  3. Communication
  4. Results
